Google Surveys – A New Monetization Opportunity for Web Publishers

google consumer survey

Google has introduced a new do-it-yourself product called Consumers Surveys to help businesses, big or small, perform targeted market research using online surveys.

For instance, if you are planning to introduce a new dish in your restaurant, you can create a survey targeting residents of your area and those in a particular income group. The following video offers more details about the new Consumer Survey product.

A Monetization Opportunity for Websites

The company creating the survey will pay Google $0.10 per response (for a general survey) or $0.50 per response for a demographically targeted survey (like when they want to target residents of New York who are in the 18-24 age group). These surveys will be embedded on Google network sites (much like AdSense ads) and Google will pay the web publisher a commission each time a visitor completes the survey.

You may wonder what is the incentive for the visitor to fill the survey? That will be decided by the publisher – they can either offer "premium" content to visitors who complete a consumer survey or maybe they can put their site's registration for behind a survey.

Google has put up an online form for publishers who wish to apply for the Consumer Survey Program. The support site says that integrating surveys in a website is very similar to how your set up AdSense ads on your website. It however remains to be seen if Google will allow small publishers into the program.

Android App Turns your Smartphone into a Simple Phone for Seniors
Mar 29th 2012, 10:04

Your mobile phone is not a phone anymore, it's a digital camera, a gaming console, a GPS navigation device, a music player, an e-book read, a file storage device, an alarm clock and lot's more all rolled into one convenient device.

That said, some people do no need all the bells and whistles that are now part of every phone. For instance, I cannot imagine my grandma using my Android phone because the device is just too complicated for her. She doesn't have any interest in the apps and all she needs is basic mobile phone that can do phone calls and text messages.

Some mobile companies do offer cell phones optimized for seniors but if you want the best of both worlds, just buy a regular Android phone and install Phonotto. This is a free app that will convert any Android "smartphone" into a "simple phone" hiding all the complexities and apps from the user. The following screenshots will give you a better idea.

Phone Home Screen  Call Number Compost SMS Text Message  Read SMS in big fonts

Once installed, the app basically add a new layer on your Android phone giving quick access to essential phone functions while keeping all the apps in the background. The app's interface uses large buttons with big fonts thus making the design more accessible to seniors.

The app can be configured to auto-start at boot time so it is always available. And while there's little need to use the physical buttons on your phone, one can press the "Home" button to hide the Phonotto app and switch to your regular Android screen.

App developer Edoardo Turelli says that they plan to add more features in the near future like the ability to capture or browse photos. The app would also be more useful if it integrated with the phone's address book because people don't remember phone numbers anymore.

[Do Not Distrub] An Android App for Reporting SMS Spam in India
Mar 28th 2012, 17:40

If you do not wish to receive unwanted SMS messages or telemarketing voice calls on your mobile phone, you can add your number to the DND (Do Not Call / Do Not Disturb) list.

To get started, just send a text message "START 0" to 1909 and most mobile operators say that promotional calls and SMS messages should stop within the next 7 days.

SMS 1909 Complaint

How to Register DND Complaints through SMS

However, if your number is registered on the Do Not Disturb list and you continue to receive "unsolicited" calls or SMS messages, you can register a complaint by sending an SMS to short code 1909 in the following format:

COMP TEL NO XXXXXXXXXX, dd/mm/yy, Time hh:mm

Here XXXXXXXXXX is the telephone number from which the SMS was received while the other fields represent the date and time of the message.

It obviously requires too many keystrokes to report even spam text message to your cellular operator but if you have an Android mobile phone, a new app called SMSpam by Deepak Jharodia can help you do that with a single tap.

The app works much like the one-click "Report Spam" button in Gmail. It offers a list of text messages that you have received in the past few days and you can tap on any of the spam message to directly report it to your mobile operator. Behind the scenes, the app composes a new complaint message in the format recommended by TRAI and forwards it your operator.

Once the complaint is received, your mobile operator will send an acknowledgment and the status of your complaint will be made available within 7 days of the booking date. This is a TRAI order so mobile operators across the country are likely to follow the guidelines.

SMSspam is useful though I wish the developer had opted for a more soothing color scheme. Also, it can only report spam text messages but not those unwanted commercial phone calls.

Digital Inspiration Technology Blog: Google Abandons Music Search in India

Google Abandons Music Search in India

Google India Music

In October 2010, Google launched a music portal in India to help people find "legal" songs from Bollywood films and music albums. Google partnered with three music companies – Saavn, Saregama and In.com – for the content and itself played the role of an aggregator.

The music service is still available at google.co.in/music but it looks like Google has more or less abandoned the project.

The homepage of the Google India Music website hasn't been updated for a long time now and a quick search reveals that none of the newer Hindi films – like Kahaaani or Agent Vinod – are available in Google Music though they are very much part of the online catalog of Saavn and In.com.

Another time-sorted Google search suggests that just one music album has been added to Google's Music catalog this year.

Google has a revenue sharing arrangement with partners – the music player window shows regular AdSense ads  – and the initial plan was to integrate music into their main search results. That never happened or maybe the advertising revenue wasn't convincing enough for partners.

Fortunately, you can do easily without Google Music as there's Dhingana, Gaana, Saavn and Flipkart’s MP3 store.
